One of the first crocus to flower in the early spring, Crocus tommasinianus and also known as the woodland crocus or Tommasini's crocus are often referred to as 'tommies because they were named after the botanist Muzio G. Spirito de Tommasini, who was Mayor of the city of Trieste, a city in the northern part of Italy.
