Ornithogalum Saundersiae

Description

Ornithogalum Saundersiae produces superb star shaped white flowers with contrasting black eyes on tall waving strong stems. This variety is also often known as Chinkerinchee, The Star Of Bethlehem, Giant Ornothagalum. A stunning variety Ornithogalum Saundersiae. Accordingly this variety is an excellent addition to any garden and will work well with lilies especially. Ornithogalum Saundersiae is native to South Africa so as such likes the warmer parts of the garden.

Cultivation instruction

Plant Indoors: Start indoors in sheltered areas and plant out when the fear of frosts have passed. Can be planted in pots and then if required removed and planted into well cultivated soils.

Plant outside: Soils should be cultivated to a depth of 20cms to allow good root development. Before planting, prepare the area by digging in well rotted compost and grit in heavier soils. Plant bulbs with the pointy bit facing upwards 15cm below the surface of the soil and avoid using any high content nitrogen fertilisers on them during the growing season. A great feature in cottage gardens or herbaceous borders as the foliage remains green for a long period of time. Regularly feed during the growing season with foods such as are well rotted manures, Tomato feed and bone meal will provide food for continued flowering.

Care Tips:

Plant in groups of three or more but also Ideal as a companion planting with lilies.

The bulbs are semi hardy so can be left to over winter in free draining soils, just ensure you mulch them well.

Can be used as a cut-flower.
